During the Delhi promotion of the upcoming Punjabi comedy film “Kitty Outtag 4”, producer-actor Gippy Grewal spoke about the challenges of maintaining a successful franchise, He spoke in detail about the challenges of maintaining a successful franchise, the evolving use of AI in cinema, and the emotional decision to digitally recreate the late actor Jaswinder Bhalla in the film.
For context, the film is part of one of Punjabi cinema’s most famous comedy franchises, which is set for release in cinemas worldwide on 26 June 2026. It is directed by Sameep Kang and written by Naresh Katuria, and is produced by Humble Motion Pictures and Panorama Studio.
Gippy Grewal: Bringing the late actor Jaswinder Bhalla into the film was quite difficult.
Speaking about the use of technology in the film, Gippy Grewal said that the team had a difficult creative dec We had to take lessons. The actor said:
“In a franchise like this, whether it’s the first instalment or the last, the main goal is always the same: to create something that the audience will like. Over time, we’ve understood what people like and what they don’t, and in the fourth instalment, we’re carrying that lesson forward.”
“To be honest, we also felt that the film wouldn’t be complete without Bhalla ji. But somehow, with the help of AI and VFX, we were able to make it possible. We never imagined that Mr Bhalla could be recreated in this way through VFX and still feel so present with us. This makes the film even more special. He is still a part of the film.”
They further addressed the widespread debate surrounding artificial intelligence in film production, taking into account its positive and negative applications.
“It depends; every tool can be used for both good and bad purposes. AI is also something that can be misused in many contexts, but in this case, we used it to bring Bhalla Ji into the film. The film doesn’t feel complete without him, and the fans also wanted to see him on screen. So yes… we used AI here for a specific creative purpose. However, it wouldn’t feel right to do it in every film,” he said.
Reflecting on the early days of the franchise, Grewal recalled how ‘ Carry On Jatta’ was a risky project initially, which many producers were not willing to finance.
“As a producer, my first film was “Kitty Uggar” and initially, I wasn’t the only one planning to make it. I approached several producers, But many of them were hesitant to invest, because films of this kind weren’t really doing well and the audience wouldn’t enjoy this sort of material. Some were suggesting that we should make something else instead,” he said.
He went on to say, “But I was quite firm about my point of view; I wanted to make this film exactly as it was. In the end, I decided to put in whatever resources I had. With my friend Binnu, we pulled together everything we had and made the film a reality. Today, thanks to the love of the audience, we are making a fourth instalment. Interestingly, some of the very same people who once said that a film like this wouldn’t work are no longer active in the industry and have moved on to other projects.
Let us tell you that in this film, Binnu Dhillon, Sargan Mehta, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Karmjeet Anmol, Jasmin Bajwa, B.N. Sharma, Prince Kanwaljeet Singh and Pukhraj Bhalla are among the strong cast.
Gippy Grewal shared an interesting anecdote
Gippy Grewal also shared an anecdote about an initial conversation with a senior Bollywood personality, illustrating how Punjabi cinema was once looked down upon.
“Once… Diljit paaji (Dusanjh) and I were in Mumbai for a project and a very famous Bollywood actor was staying at the same hotel. We went to meet him and introduced ourselves as singers and actors from Punjab. He was polite to us, but he also asked, ‘Oh, do they make Punjabi films as well?’ At the time… it felt a bit disheartening. But looking back today, the Punjabi film industry has grown so much. There is so much work and success now that even people outside the industry accept it with respect, They often address the artists as ‘Paji’ and acknowledge the contribution of Punjabi cinema.”
